Landfill Directive

The latest EU Landfill Directive, effective from 1 October 2007, ‘represents a step change in the way we dispose of waste in this country’, according to DEFRA.

The Directive's aim is ‘to prevent or reduce as far as possible negative effects on the environment, in particular the pollution of surface water, groundwater, soil and air, and on the global environment, including the greenhouse effect, as well as any resulting risk to human health, from the landfilling of waste, during the whole life-cycle of the landfill’.

Essentially, the new Directive is aimed at reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill, which means that services we provide will become increasingly important. Pyros Environmental Ltd is able to reduce the mass of most industrial waste types by up to 99%.

Under the terms of the new EU Landfill Directive there are many new categories of waste which previously went to landfill but now have to be destroyed. These include contaminated wood, non-recyclable car parts, tyre crumb and CFC-blown insulated foams (from refrigerators and freezers, for example).

If you would like to discuss whether High Temperature Incineration (HTI) or Waste to Energy (WTE) would be an appropriate way of destroying your waste and help you to meet your obligations under the new Landfill Directive, please contact: 02380 883000, Pyros Environmental Ltd.

Our ability and facilities for converting Waste to Energy are unmatched in the UK.
