As a responsible member of UK industry and our local community, Pyros is helping to manage waste and safeguard the environment.

Our aim is to minimise emissions to air, land and water, and to maximise opportunities to return energy as a by-product of our waste disposal activities.

Our waste incineration activities are licensed by Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) permits that are regulated by the Environment Agency. The site permits allow us to incinerate up to 105,000 tonnes a year.

Pyros Environmental Ltd is licensed to dispose of all types of hazardous and non-hazardous waste as defined by the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005. The Site also has an RSA93 licence for accumulation and disposal of low-level radioactive wastes.

PPC is an important part of the Environment Agency’s work to meet UK obligations under the European Union’s Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive.

All UK businesses who produce and manage waste have a ‘duty of care’ under the Environmental Protection Act of 1990 to ensure that all waste is handled safely and within the law, and this is a duty that we respect with absolute integrity. Pyros’ site at Fawley, Hampshire is a top-tier COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) site.

Our customers can conduct Duty of Care Audit of the Pyros Fawley site at any time (under the terms of the Environmental Protection Duty of Care Regulations 2003).

Under the terms of our PPC permit, we apply Best Available Technology (BAT) principles to the disposal of waste. BAT is a term applied specifically in regard to pollutant discharges, where traditional cost-benefit analyses may be overridden by environmental considerations.

We are also highly conscious of our more general health and safety responsibilities. We have a dedicated SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) manager, and have been awarded both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification.
